The bestowing of a name—meaning, purpose, life itself—from one generation to the next is a uniquely divine privilege. In the biblical account of the genealogy of Christ, King David doesn’t exist apart from the otherwise unknown life of his great, great grandfather, Salmon. Heroes come and go, but in God’s plan there are no insignificant people. For some of us, our highest and most noble achievement may not lay in what we do, but in what we do for the next generation.
